This year, I tried three different delivery plans to help meet eat more healthy food in the middle of my busy life: HungryRoot, Splendid Spoon, and Fresh n Lean. These three plans are not your standard "Blue Apron," because I, frankly, don't like to cook on a daily basis. My goals when I chose these services: 1) I won't have to grocery shop; 2) I can have food on the table within 15 minutes of walking in the door after a long day at work; 3) I will eat whole-food, veggie-filled meals; 4) I needed gluten-free meals, because my doctor suggested there might be a link between my migraines and gluten, so each of these plans have a gluten-free option. Since I live in the middle of nowhere, all of these came to my door by FedEx or other delivery service. Here are my experiences with all three plans. (Note: there are no affiliate links on this page. I really purchased all three of these plans on my own, and am writing this review to help others, not to sell any product)
HungryRoot: This is really a grocery delivery service, but it has a small range of veggie-based mix-and-match choices that are easy to prepare, fresh, and healthy. They have pastas, salads, market plates, flatbreads, veggies noodles, grain bowls, stir-fries and wraps. All of the veggies were pre-cut and ready to cook or eat raw. They have three box sizes to choose from, and I found the small box to be more than enough for me for a week. The plan was really easy to customize, their customer service is great, and the food was fresh and exactly as advertised. You probably don't want to choose this plan if you don't like vegetarian/vegan food. The salmon and other animal protein options are awesome, but carnivores aren't going to find enough options here. The only reason I cancelled was because I got bored and wanted to try something else. I also wasted too much food since I only eat one meal a day at home. More information about their food options.
Splendid Spoon: This one offers "plant-based smoothies, soups and grain bowls delivered ready-to-eat." With a nice array of flavor options, I liked these a lot. The smoothies were perfect to grab and go in the morning, and the soups and bowls fed me very well every night. When I didn't eat everything from the week's delivery, I could tuck these into the freezer. Again, customer service was great, you can customize what you receive every week, and if you need to put the service on hold (while on vacation, or catching up on what's in the freezer), it is easy to do. I would definitely do this one again.
Fresh n Lean: This service provides fully prepared refrigerated meals (notice that I got even lazier as I chose new plans?). While there is quite a bit of variety from week to week, you don't have the option to create your own menus each week. You choose a particular meal plan--protein+, keto, paleo, vegan standard, vegan low carb, and they create meals and package them in vacuum packed trays. I didn't find the website or customer service to be as easy to navigate with this plan as the other two. The food was tasty (I did paleo on this one, I think) with large meat portions served on top of cooked-together vegetable mixes. I would have been happier with a few more meals with simple single vegetables, or some separated into their own space in the packaging, but the meat was always excellent. The flavors were blander than Splendid Spoon, and I got bored with it faster than any of the others.
